Manitoba Master Angler Rainbow Trout
Labor Day Weekend was a hot & sunny one this year. My wife and I decided to try trout fishing at Lyons Lake. Thanks to a good breeze it made fishing a little rough in getting the lines out. Casting into the wind and having the float move into the shoreline would mean many casts would have to take place in order to keep bait in the proper depth and just above the bottom. We set sliding bobber at 10 feet and casted out into the wind. We paused for a minute as Wilma was bringing down deck chairs and refreshments to enjoy the day. Wilma said one bobber has gone under and I ran to the rod that was sliding off the dock and into the lake and set the hook. This Rainbow Trout put on an ariel display that I will remember for ever. I had to play it out as we had no landing net at the dock and Wilma went to our camper to retrieve it. She had to untangle it as it was wedged behind the cab of my truck , this seemed to take hours, rather than five minutes, trying to keep the fish on the light line, with ultralight rod & reel and of course barb less hook. I was happy to land it but the fight was too much for this beauty. We tried to revive it for twenty minutes and we also had the helping hand of the local game warden who also tried but to no avail. We have taken people fishing in Manitoba and they have caught master angler trout but this was the first one for me. Thanks to The Ministry of Natural Resources & Fisheries for stocking small lakes so that the average person & family can have a great day in the outdoors. Lyons Lake is situated on the Ontario Manitoba Border within sight of the Trans Canada Highway just West of the Weigh Station on the South side of Highway
